In order to successfully participate in Solana’s thriving ecosystem, independent of the shackles that centralized entities put upon you, you need to be able to successfully choose and operate a wallet or even multiple wallets. There are many options that are compatible with Solana to choose from. Each has its pros and cons, but some do stand out in terms of user experience, safety and feature set. In this article, you will learn about some of the best Solana wallets and what each one of them can offer.

What Is a crypto wallet?

To take part in the world of cryptocurrencies, you will probably need to create a crypto wallet. The name might indicate that crypto wallets store your money like a normal wallet, but it actually works a little differently. Your cryptocurrencies are actually stored in the blockchain. Crypto wallets allow you to manage your Public Key (AKA Wallet Address) and a Private Key (your only way to access your wallet, keep it safe), oftentimes through a friendly interface that is easier to use than the command-line-interface (CLI) that developers are used to. These keep your crypto safe, accessible and allow you to perform numerous types of transactions such as transferring or staking.

What Is a non-custodial wallet?

If you want to interact with the Solana ecosystem, e.g: stake or play around with the different dApps or Decentralized Finance (DeFi) projects, you will almost always have to use a non-custodial wallet. The other alternative to manage your crypto is to use a custodial wallet on an centralized exchange. But what is the difference? In a custodial wallet, the private keys are owned by the company that owns the wallet, rather than by the users. A non-custodial wallet, on the other hand, allows users to be their own banks and manage their crypto sets on their own. Users have complete control over their private keys and funds! But keep in mind, ‘with great power, comes great responsibility!’

You are the one in control and responsible for its security. You don’t rely on the security of a third party, which is likely to be a target of attacks due to how many assets it holds, and nobody can freeze your funds. For this reason, non-custodial crypto wallets have been gaining traction over custodial wallets due to the diffusion of DeFi and NFTs. The only thing that can be tricky with non-custodial wallets is that you are responsible for all your Seed Phrases and in turn, your private keys. In case you lose your Seed Phrase or share it with someone else, you risk sharing access to your funds. Anyone who has access to your Seed Phrase, ultimately has access (and control over) your funds. You are best advised to securely store your Seed Phrase (offline or encrypted) and never share it with anyone. Furthermore, we encourage you to always use a hardware wallet in order to add an additional layer of security.

Wallet options for Solana

Solana supports many different wallets, from command-line wallets (CLI) to third-party wallets. There are a few types of wallets that can be used in the Solana network: web, mobile app, hardware, and command-line wallets. Command-line wallets are quite complex and would ideally require the user to have some development / programming experience. Hardware wallets can be used alongside with other front-end wallet interfaces, as an additional safety feature. Alternatively they can also be used as a stand-alone solution.

Web and mobile app Solana wallets are better for less experienced blockchain users. Both allow you to use the Solana network without the need to learn command line tools, making them the most fitting options for the majority of users. However, if you start to accumulate a good amount of assets and wish to look for the most secure options, hardware wallets are the ones to go.

To speed up your search for a suitable wallet solution, we drafted the following overview of some of the best Solana wallets below:

The answer to this question will ultimately depend on your needs in the crypto market. But some wallets are more commonly preferred by users for several reasons. To determine the best Solana wallets, it’s important to consider their security, interface, user experience, and applications.

When considering all these factors, SolFlare or Phantom do stand out as the best crypto wallet to be used in the Solana blockchain. Of course, if you want to have many different tokens in the same wallet or are looking for a mobile app wallet, other options will be more fitting. Otherwise, these two wallets are usually the best-performing ones in the Solana blockchain ecosystem, especially if you want a great experience with Solana.

Either way, we always highly recommend using a hardware wallet - it is definately worth the investment.
